Officially asks for:
-calves raised for veal, egg laying hens, and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn freely
-Exceptions made for transportation, rodeos, fairs, 4-H programs, lawful slaughter, research and veterinary purposes
-Provides misdemeanor penalties, including a fine not to exceed $1,000 and/or imprisonment in jail for up to 180 days
argument for:
stops cruel and inhumane treatment of animals. Promotes food safety and protects environment. agribusiness interests opposing prop 2 masquerading as the deceptively named "Californians for safe food" have a record of duping the public, harming animals, and polluting. calves are tethered by the neck and can barely move, pigs bite the metal bars of their crates, hens get trapped and even impaled in their wire cages. Conditions like this promote the spread of disease as we saw in Chino this year. California family farmers support prop 2 because they believe food quality and safety are enhanced by safe farming practices. Factory farms have devastating effects on the environment, eliminate them and protect our air and water.
against:
Jobs will be lost and egg prices will skyrocket. If this is passed we will only be able to buy eggs trucked in from thousands of miles away. hens are protected in these cages and they have all the space they need. migratory birds can infect them with BIRD FLU!!! It's risky, california law already protects animal safety.
my take:
Both sides leave you with things to question. Biggest argument against is that it will drive the business out of california. Fuck em' though, it's all scare tactics. This will be an example to follow and if enough states support it the egg guys will have nowhere to hide. This is a principle thing and we will make a stand and lead a wave across other states. I can survive without eggs if I have to. If I need to boycott eggs to reinforce my point that's a small sacrifice. Read The Omnivores Dilemma or anything by Michael Pollan, the state of food in this country is really a joke on a lot of fronts, and the joke is on us. We are spoon fed what to think and what to ignore and they do what they want under our noses. It's a McCain/Pailin-Psycho/Nazi-GOP/Fuckhead kind of business as usual mentality and it needs to end. this is a little step but a necessary one.
final word:
I will vote for this proposition. If it raises the cost of eggs I will know the eggs I eat aren't the little concentrated bubbles of pain they are now for the most part. I believe that the emotion, good or bad, becomes a part of the animal and its by-products and if you eat it it's a part of you. If for nothing else do it to be selfish. Yes on 2.
